There is no denying that the hopes and expectations of the Polish freediving community before the competition were quite high. For years, our representatives have been systematically raising the bar and winning subsequent medals and setting world records. It was no different before the very beginning of the World Freediving Championships in Belgrade.

That is why we waited impatiently and with great excitement for the first Polish starts. Both in the women’s and men’s competition our representation aimed for the highest places.

A strong start

Confirmation of these expectations came very quickly. On the very first day of the World Championships , Julia Kozerska not only won the gold medal, but also set a new CMAS world record. Her result of 210 m in Dynamic Apnea Without Fins – DNF will go down in history.

Today, on the first day of the CMAS World Championships, I won a gold medal and set a new DNF World Record with a score of 210 metres. This is the longest distance ever swum by a woman without fins and the first 200m turnaround, in a 50m pool, done by a woman. It couldn’t be better! Kozerska was happy.

Julia’s result also allowed her to break the current AIDA world record in DNF – 207m. At this point it is worth noting that it belonged to Magdalena Solich-Talanda, who set it in May 2022. Magda in Belgrade achieved a distance of 198.69m, which allowed her to take third place and win the bronze medal. In second place with a 200m result was Croatian Mirela Kardašević, who claimed the silver medal. In the DNF competition the 10th place went to Natalia Wilk, who reached the distance of 127.57 m.

But that was not the end of the great news that day. In men’s competition Mateusz Malina presented himself very well, who reached a distance of 233.8 m and won the gold medal. Surely many fans were counting on such a turn of events, as Mateusz is the current DNF world record holder with 250 m.

By a hair…

On the second day of the World Championships the representative of Poland stood on the podium again in the Dynamic Apnea With Bi Fins – DYN BF. Unfortunately, this time the Pole (274.06 m) lost by a hair to Frenchman Guillaum Bourdila (274.7 m) and reached for the silver medal. It should be noted that it was a remarkable duel, which allowed the Frenchman to set a new world record. The lowest step of the podium was taken by the Chinese Ming Jin (William Joy) with 251.6 m. Karol Karcz took 9th place with 214.88 m.

Meanwhile, among women, no less exciting rivalry for the gold medal was fought by Magdalena Solich-Talanda and Mirela Kardašević. In the dynamic double fin – DYN BF competition the Croatian proved to be better this time. Kardašević achieved a distance of 250 m, which allowed her to win the gold medal and set a new CMAS world record. Magda with a result of 248.7m this time won the silver medal. Third place and bronze medal went to Italian Livia Bregonzio (240.6m). Natalia Wilk with 156.2m took 19th place.

Let’s hope that the next struggles during the Belgrade 2022 Freediving World Pool Championships will also be successful for our athletes. We will inform about their results soon.
