Media around the world have reported that the wreck of the French submarine “Minerve”, which disappeared in January 1968, has been found. The vessel disappeared at the southern end of France, near the war port of Toulon. Fifty-two sailors died on board. Despite a strenuous search and a lot of pressure to find the vessel, all efforts were unsuccessful.

The disappearance of the “Minerve” was one of the biggest mysteries of the French navy. Until now, the French Daphné class submarine remained missing. Finally, the wreck was found about 45 km off the coast of Toulon, at a depth of 2370 metres. The French were supported in their search by the American company Ocean Infinity, which specialises in exploring the deep sea.

It was Ocean Infinity’s highly skilled team, operating advanced equipment that helped the Argentine Navy last year, in the search for the missing ARA submarine ‘San Juan’, which was finally found on 17 November 2018.

“We have just found Minerve. A success, a relief and a great feat in technical terms. My thoughts are now with the families who have waited so long for this moment,” Florence Parly, the French defence minister, wrote on Twitter.

The families of the missing sailors have never come to terms with the lack of explanation of this tragedy and, with their requests, forced the French authorities to resume the search at the beginning of 2019. Today we can know the finale of this tragic story, whose final pages will soon be written thanks to the discovery of the wreck.

According to information provided by the French navy, the wreck lies on the bottom divided into three parts. It was also reported that the wreck of the ‘Minerve’ will not be brought to the surface, but will be investigated to determine the cause of its sinking. It will forever remain a grave for its 52 crew members.
