At the bottom, a habitat from ancient times was found in the north-eastern Aegean Sea. Among the ancient remains there were, among others, the remains of pottery and the place where they were most probably made. Interestingly, such an interesting find was made at a depth of only 2m!
In the waters surrounding the island of Delos near Mykonos, archaeologists have located sixteen fragments of various ceramic objects and a kiln used to make them. . The surrounding media were quick to christen the find as “little Pompeii”.
What was initially thought by the National Hellenic Research Foundation to be the remains of a port, as a result of research by the Ephorate of Undersea Archaeology, turned out to be the aforementioned ceramic workshop. As you can see, it is worth exploring particular locations in detail to learn about their true nature and former purpose.
“Similar workshops have been found in Pompeii and Herculaneum, which is probably why the whole thing quickly gained publicity, ” said a representative of the Greek government
Apart from the above-mentioned pottery and the place of its production, large boulders were also found, which, according to the archaeologists, were most probably a fragment of the bank of the settlement.
According to archaeologists, they were probably a fragment of the settlement’s waterfront. Fragments of a collapsed colonnade and remains of a wall, which limited the access from the land side, were also found. The whole find is an extremely interesting addition to what has already been established before.
In ancient times, between the 7th and 1st century BC, the area was known as the birthplace of the mythical god Apollo and one of the largest slave markets, where up to 10,000 slaves went under the hammer on a single day.
According to historical accounts, everything changed in 88 BC when the island was invaded by Mithridates VI king of Pontus with his army. It is said that 20,000 inhabitants of Delos were cut down during the raid. As a result of further invasions, the island was depopulated in the 5th century AD.
