According to the Radio Gdańsk website, fishermen have caught an unusual fish from the Baltic Sea. It is a mola mola, also called sunfish. It may not be a big sensation for the diving fraternity, as there are many surprises underwater, but the unusual catch has already been hailed as a ichthyological sensation by the media.
In a conversation with a Radio Gdańsk journalist, Professor Krzysztof Skóra, head of the Marine Station of the University of Gdańsk in Hel, told us something about the unusual fish:
“It is very round and looks like it is made up of only a head, with small fins. Plus it’s dangerous because it has neurotoxins in it.”
The steelhead is the largest representative of the bony-skeleton fish, which can reach a body weight of 2-3 tonnes in the upper limits! The specimen in question, however, was much smaller and weighed only 10kg at 57cm. As a subtropical fish, it lives in warm subtropical seas and probably came to the Baltic Sea with the Gulf Stream in summer.
Unable to escape from the Baltic Sea, it has twice fallen prey to fishermen from the Hel Peninsula. The first time, the exotic fish was released back into the wild, but on the next encounter it was already dead. In this situation, the unlucky spadefish was handed over to scientists. The cause of death was probably the harsh conditions and low temperature, to which the representatives of this species are not accustomed.
