In the past week, the PADI training offer has expanded with a new specialization – PADI ScubaFit. The new course was developed by Gretchen M. Ashton – fitness instructor and Stepfen Mendel – experienced diving instructor (NAUI, CMAS, PADI, HSA)

The new training is designed to improve divers’ health, fitness and safety. It is well known that a proper warm-up can work wonders in avoiding injuries or improving our performance. If we add to this proper stretching and aerobic exercises, we can be sure that we have done a lot to avoid injuries resulting from lack of physical preparation.

Both Ashton and Mendel agree that they drew inspiration, and practical advice, from research conducted by Dr Glen Egstorm, professor emeritus of kinesiology at the University of California. Egstrom is known for his contributions to the development of safe diving. He is the author of numerous research projects and over 100 publications on dive training and safety.

“We believe that our collaboration provides the best possible combination of knowledge, resources and experience to bring the worlds of diving and fitness together. We encourage both dive instructors and fitness professionals to expand their training offerings with this specialisation, which adds an element that is very often overlooked by many divers – proper physical and motor preparation.” – according to the authors of the specialisation.

The aim of the new training course is to teach new divers to work on their fitness and general physical development. It is important for people starting their underwater adventure to realise the importance of physical fitness and proper preparation in such a demanding sport as diving.

The course is run as a safe and supervised aerobic activity, for diving enthusiasts. While learning, we will be introduced to basic knowledge and skills, planning, organisation, procedures, techniques, problems and hazards. We will see how fitness classes can develop and improve our diving. Thanks to them, we can avoid many illnesses and injuries.

For divers with more experience and knowledge, in addition to the above-mentioned topics, there will be additional issues such as: training plans, basics of nutrition and hydration for diving.
