In the waters of Lake Rakowe in the Lubuskie Voivodeship, 18 sapper divers and 5 technical protection specialists were training to disarm, among others, a sunken tank. The aforementioned reservoir is the deepest lake in the region, which has been adapted into an underwater obstacle course where Polish Army divers can perfect their skills.

Participating in the training are soldiers of the 1st EOD Regiment from Brzeg and the 5th Borderland EOD Battalion from Krosno Odrzańskie, part of the 17th Wielkopolska Mechanised Brigade from Międzyrzecz. It is the brigade from Międzyrzecz that organises the exercises, during which divers from different parts of the country have an opportunity to train together and share experience.

“This is extreme diving. We train for combat operations in different conditions. Now these are winter conditions, which means heavy exercises. But I have very good people who perform their tasks well,” explains Sergeant Zbigniew Piech a diver with 20 years of experience from the 1st Brzeski Regiment of Sappers.

The divers taking part in the training were divided into two groups. The task for the first group was to find the sunken tank, check for people inside and completely disarm the machine and extract all ammunition.

At this time, the second group of divers practiced the emergency situation of getting to the surface with an ending supply of breathing mixture, during an ice dive. The divers had to forge their own escape route equipped only with diving knives.

During their stay in Wędrzyn, the divers are also trained in identifying and mining the bottom of a body of water and underwater welding. The training lasts two weeks, during which each diver will spend over 24 hours underwater.

“During the classes we have started, we will pay attention to the divers’ psycho-physical predispositions, their fitness and underwater navigation skills” – further explained Sgt. Piech

Rakowe Lake is located on a military training ground and forms part of a training complex. The entire complex was prepared in such a way as to best prepare military divers for service in even the most difficult conditions.
