Yesterday, the Naval Museum in Gdynia hosted a meeting with the participants of the Santi expedition To Discover the Eagle. The aim of the search, as you can easily guess, is the wreck of the legendary Polish submarine ORP “Orzeł”. A surprise turned out to be the highlight of the event, which certainly confirmed that the participants had made a good decision by going to the museum that day.

During the meeting, members of the project presented the results of previous research, summarising the material gathered before the May expedition to the North Sea. What is interesting, the next expedition will be a field for hydrographers only. We can therefore conclude that the first half of the year will see the selection of individual items from which a group for further research will be chosen.

Among those who appeared before the gathering at the Naval Museum and presented particular aspects of the entire event were:

  • Tomasz Stachura – head of the ‘SANTI Finding Eagle’ project – presentation of the project
  • Dr Hubert Jando – Historian – Historical aspect of the disappearance of ORP “Orzeł”
  • Dr Jarosław “Kostek” Nowak – hydrographic methods for the search of sunken wrecks

Undoubtedly, what aroused the greatest interest was the plaque from the navigation buoy of the “Eagle”. This is the only physical remnant of the Polish ship. No less interesting than the plaque itself is the story of how it ended up in the museum and why it is not on display.

How has the element survived to this day? Well, the “plate” was dismantled during the deployment of the unit to the service in Great Britain. After being replaced, the old plate was supposed to be scrapped, but… someone “took it in” and this is how it has survived to the present day. The most interesting thing, however, is how it ended up in the Gdynia museum.

It was donated by an anonymous old man. In addition to the plaque, the old man also gave an enigmatic explanation that he was about to undergo an operation and if he survived, he would tell the whole story. Unfortunately, he never reappeared, which leads us to believe that unfortunately he did not survive the operation.

This has severely complicated the issue of the plaque, as its legal status is still undetermined. As a result, the museum cannot include it in its list of exhibits and display it to the public. Those present at the meeting were lucky to be among the few who saw it with their own eyes. After a short presentation, the object was hurriedly carried out of the room.
