For today we have another exceptional feat! This time a representation of our neighbours from Russia claimed the record for the deepest dive under the ice! During a dive in the waters of the White Sea, members of the Russian Geographical Society descended to a depth of more than 100 metres below the level of the ice cap and thus set a new world record. As Interfax news agency reported, the dive was not a descent for a record in itself, but the result of testing new equipment.
The heroes of the day were Maxim Astakhov and Alexander Gubin, two members of the Russian Geographical Association. The men made an 80-minute dive, during which they tested new diving equipment, and in the process descended to a depth of 102 metres, setting an ice diving depth record. This is no mean feat, as the temperature in the White Sea, located on the edge of the Arctic Circle, is… -1.5 ºC! The negative temperature while being liquid is possible due to the high salinity of the body of water.
“It was not totally dark, which is what I expected. I also had great pleasure in observing creatures living at a depth of 102 metres, in such a difficult environment, almost at the bottom of the White Sea,” Astakhov said after the dive.
Serba Bozana Ostojic, a member of the World Underwater Federation and an expert on the logistical operations of the Jacques-Yves Cousteau Team, was present on site to confirm that all the requirements were met for the record to be recognised.
In the attached video released by Russian media, you can see both divers diving under the ice, laden with the cylinders needed to carry out the dive. The whole dive was, of course, conducted in compliance with the elementary rules of ice diving. During the dive, which can be heard on the video, one of the divers says that his equipment did not work properly in the extreme conditions, but after a while everything started to work.

The expedition, which included a dive in the White Sea, is part of the 13 Seas of Russia project run by the Russian Geographical Society since July 2015.
It is worth mentioning here that in 1999. Sławomir “Paco” Paćko and Jacek “Jumbo” Książak dived under the ice in Lake Hańcza to the depth of 105 metres. Their feat was repeated in 2011, also in the same area, by Agnieszka Kiel- Pałys.
