An unprecedented rescue operation in Thailand has been successful. All those trapped in the flooded cave were brought to the surface.

It worked! The rescue operation in the flooded cave, which the whole world followed with bated breath, was a success. 17 days after the 12 boys and their coach were reported missing, the last of the missing was back on the surface, safe and sound. An incredible effort on every level and support from every corner of the world made it possible to bring this story to a happy end. Although, unfortunately, not without losses.

It all started on June 23, as it was on that day that 12 boys from the football team and their coach were reported missing. The next day, traces were found indicating that they had all been Trapped in a flooded cave. Consequently, the combing of the cave and the fight against escaping time began. Unfortunately, heavy rainfall, which first cut off the exit route for the missing team, is now hampering the search for them.

Diving is my passion and that’s why I always wondered if it had a purpose. The last two weeks have made me realise that it does, because this is what I have been preparing for all my life – John Volanthen, diver in charge of the rescue operation, said

On 28 June, conditions are so bad that they force the search to be halted. However, no one loses hope and with the improvement in the weather, the operation is resumed. On Monday, 2 July, the rescuers manage to reach the missing persons and establish that they are all alive. Now the real challenge for the rescue teams is to get everyone out of the flooded cave and back to the surface.

Finally, the rescue operation in Thailand gathered pace and began to move towards its finale on Sunday, July 8. It was then that the rescuers following the planrescuers brought the first four boys from the cave to the surface. Another four were rescued on Monday, and by Tuesday all 12, along with their coach, were on the surface. The world breathed a sigh of relief. We did it!

Saman Gunan

Unfortunately, in the course of the operations, the highest price was paid by one of the rescuers – Saman Gunan, a sergeant and diver of the Thai special forces. Saman made sure that the children trapped in the flooded cave had enough oxygen. Without his efforts, the whole subsequent rescue operation would not have been possible at all. He sealed his efforts and dedication with the loss of his own life. There is no doubt that his sacrifice was not in vain. Honour his memory.

The rescue operation involved 90 diving specialists. 50 from within Thailand and 40 from around the world, including Poland. Using their knowledge and years of experience, they made the extremely difficult and unprecedented rescue operation in the flooded cave a success.
