We hope that you are already familiar with the first information about the documentary “Life on the Edge”, which had its premiere on 9 June under our patronage. Today, we would like to introduce you to three characters whose stories you will be able to get to know during the 90-minute screening. We advise you to read carefully, because soon we will be giving away among our readers tickets for the screenings in Multikino cinemas all over Poland!
Born on 21 May 1967 in Bad Ischl, Austria, Gerhard Gulewicz is one of the world’s top extreme cyclists. In the past Gerhard has won many accolades and medals in long and very long distance races. In 2007, he broke the world record for a ride across Australia and began his seven-race adventure by rallying across America, the world’s toughest cycling race.
After finishing third and then second at the Rally of the Americas, he decided to win it in 2011. Unfortunately, due to the limits of his body’s endurance, he had to give up just a few hundred kilometres before the finish line. In record time, after just a few weeks of rehabilitation, he returned to driving and announced his return to rallying, which was hard to believe even for his closest family.
Unaware of his own weaknesses and the limits of his body, Gerhard has returned to training and is preparing for the next Rally America. His motivation may be obvious, but the passion with which this man pursues his own resolve to win this rally is almost superhuman.
Such dedication and struggle with his own body in order to achieve the desired result can be envied by many an athlete. We can talk about determination, dreams, plans or even ignorance. The body may give up, but the fighting spirit cannot be defeated!
Another character in the film is Halvor Angvik, born in Oslo on 25 June. A man who frightened millions of other people with a recording of his spectacular jump :
Halvor pushed the limits of human ability, and soon a small group of people along with him fulfilled their dreams of flying. When asked about the origins of his passion for these extreme feats, he replied:
“I always demanded more from myself, I wanted to push my own boundaries”
Angvik is undoubtedly a madman on the verge of being suicidal. It’s not even sport anymore, it’s just a show that can end catastrophically every time. However, his reflections on his own achievements and the sport he practices make it clear that this is a man who loves life and wants to use it to the limit.
“It’s a very risky hobby because even the smallest mistake can cost a life. But I don’t do it for risk or fun. Risking my own life for mere fun is something I don’t understand. Fear is the strongest feeling I have ever experienced. The greatest satisfaction I get is overcoming it.”
“Climbing mountains gives me freedom, allows me to escape from civilisation, and knowing that when I reach the top I will be able to fly fills me with indescribable peace. I leave all my problems behind and feel absolutely free. I don’t live to risk, I risk to live!”
Born on 11 July 1982 in Nice, France, Guillaume Nery is the 2011 world free diving champion. He is today on the list of the top three apnea divers in the world. His passion started at an early age. He lived right by the harbour and it was here that the depths of the Mediterranean Sea first fascinated the little boy.
One day, as a result of a bet with a classmate, he discovered how exhilarating diving without equipment can be. Thanks to this he experienced, as he still recalls: “The perfect harmony of soul and body”. Under the watchful eye of a charismatic coach, he honed his skills in free diving.
In 2002, at the age of 20, he broke the world record by descending 87 metres. Just two years later, he broke his own record and reached 96 metres only to set another record of 109 metres in 2006! At the 2011 world championships in Kalamata he was given the chance to showcase his talent, which he used to great effect. He was unbeatable and became world champion. With all these achievements, he finally had to face his own weaknesses and the enormous pressure that his own successes put on him.
Still, mystical experiences and communing with nature are far more important to him than achievements and records. Guillaume presented his view of the world in a video he produced while diving in the Blue Hole cave, the deepest place in the world. With over 13 million views on YouTube, Nery has gained worldwide fame.
Taking advantage of his fame, he decided to draw people’s attention to the problem of saving the oceans. For the ‘Seven Seas Sound Mix for World Oceans Day’ soundtrack, Guillaume invited personalities such as David de Rothschild and Philippe Starck to collaborate.
