The ray – chlamida – is a primitive shark from the family of rays, which dates back to 80 million years ago. The animal is characterised by its incredible appearance and the fact that it has more than 300 teeth!
Caught off the southern coast of Portugal, the male measures 1.5 metres long and was caught at a depth of 700 metres, near Portimão.
This species is extremely rare and usually inhabits oceanic depths. Although its range is very wide and representatives of this species have been encountered at depths of 120 – 1500 metres, this is very sporadic.
Because of this, this unusual and very rare prehistoric creature still remains almost unexplored and we know very little about it.
