In August 2010 an expedition of Polish and Swedish divers took place to Narvik, in order to see and document the wreck of ORP “Grom”.

The whole expedition lasted 10 days, during which the divers had to spend as much as half their time travelling. However, it was worth overcoming all the adversities, as the participants of the expedition say, in order to be able to dive in the North Sea and see the wreck, which has only been seen by 4 teams of divers before them.

The seven Polish and two Swedish divers had been preparing for this expedition for two years. Acquiring the diving permit alone took them half a year, but it was an effort that paid off. From the underwater expedition, the group of divers brought back almost over an hour of footage, which will be used to record a documentary film. The aim of the expedition was to dive to a depth of over 100 metres and to document the wreck, which is located at the bottom of the North Sea.

An additional aim of the expedition was to collect material with which to tell the story of this ship. It is full of mysteries and white spots, because so far it has not been explained why the ship sank. As it is known, the ship took part in military operations near Narvik. 59 Polish sailors and officers died on board.

During the underwater examination the divers were not allowed to touch any elements of the wreck or make any attempts to fish them out. The items found at the bottom of the sea included helmets, fragments of weapons, sailors’ shoes and personal items belonging to the sailors. As the divers recall, it was a great experience for them, as they were able to see the remains of ORP “Grom” up close. The whole expedition was quite a dangerous undertaking, but the experienced divers returned from it safe and sound, and with material that will bring the history of the wreck closer.
