Sylvia Earle and her organisation Mission Blue have formed a coalition with PADI, encouraging everyone to support the Hope Spot. “Be the change you wish to see.”

It’s a challenge from some of the most influential organisations in the diving world – PADI and Mission Blue – who are joining forces to urge everyone who cares about the wellbeing of the oceans and who works for the underwater world to live that commitment in a more active and tangible way.

PADI CEO Drew Richardson and “Her Deepness” Sylvia Earle, legendary oceanographer and founder of global environmental coalition Mission Blue, which advocates for the creation of a network of dedicated and protected sites called “Hope Spots” in the oceans, revealed their alliance last fall at the Dive Equipment and Marketing Association show in Las Vegas.

The aim is “to inspire people to use their power – whatever it is – to do whatever it takes to protect the blue heart of the planet,” says Earle. This action can take many forms, from letting others know “the value of fish beyond something to eat” to encouraging friends and family to learn to dive so they can also learn about the creatures that inhabit the oceans in their natural habitat, Earle says. “Divers are the best ambassadors for the ocean, we can see what others can’t and can’t see.”

Earle pointed to the huge changes that have taken place in all the seas and oceans since PADI was founded in 1966. “People are changing the nature of nature,” she said. Richardson added that the goal of the PADI and Mission Blue coalition is for people to think more deeply about what is happening in the underwater space. He called on environmentally conscious and committed divers to influence others – locally, socially and politically. “We need the oceans and now the oceans need us,” – Earle added.
