ORP Arctowski: Two more wrecks found in the Baltic Sea

As the crew of the ORP Arctowski hydrographic survey unit reported, during the survey of the seabed they managed to come across two wrecks located in the vicinity of Kołobrzeg. During the survey of the place, where a shipping route along the southern coast of the Baltic Sea will soon run, a warship (most probably dating back to the IIWW times) and a fishing boat were found.

Both wrecks are less than 60m deep, so only well-trained technical divers will have access to them at a later stage. As Lieutenant Commander Artur Grządziel explains, there is no question of removing the vessels, even though they are located directly in the shipping lane, as they pose no threat and protrude only slightly, one 4.5m and the other 6.1m, from the bottom.

Once the data has been collected and preliminary surveys conducted, the wrecks found will most likely not be investigated further. The captured material will go to the database of the Hydrographic Office of the Navy.

The two recent discoveries are only one of many that have been made this year by researchers from ORP Arctowski. Without looking back too far, we can mention the wreck of most probably a German minesweeper M 85, which sank after hitting a Polish mine in September 1939, or the wreck of a Junkers aircraft. Apart from dozens of minor wrecks, the Arctowski’s crew also had such finds as the magnificent Steuben or the research expedition to the wreck of the German aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin.
