According to the online edition of Gazeta Olsztyńska, on Sunday, December 21, there was a dangerous situation during a diving exercise conducted on Ukiel Lake. During the dive there was an unusual situation, when one of the divers’ weight belt got unfastened.
Due to the loss of load compensating for the buoyancy of the rest of the equipment, the man surfaced too quickly. According to witnesses at the scene, the victim was unconscious when he surfaced.
The whole incident took place at around 11.00am near an inn located on Baltic Street. The injured diver with suspected DCS was transported by ambulance to hospital. His condition remains unknown.
Edit/23.12.2014/17:00:
As our readers have reported to us, the Olsztyn media coverage was greatly exaggerated and not very reliable. According to the reports reaching us, the injured man was conscious and suffered only a slight shock. The sudden surfacing occurred from a depth of 5m and the examinations the diver was taken to were only check-ups. As the doctors found no injury, the victim was discharged from hospital the same day.
We sincerely thank you for the information sent in this case, which allowed us to present a slightly fuller and more optimistic course and finale of the whole incident. The year 2014 was exceptionally unlucky in terms of diving accidents, especially fatal ones. It is really nice in such a situation to be able to write that fortunately nothing happened.
