Media in Norway have reported a disturbing find in the depths of Trondheim Fjord. At the bottom, located here at a depth of 600 m, a group of scientists found a stockpile of explosives from the Second World War. Among the objects located are bombs, mines and grenades.

Photographs and video footage collected using remote ROV-type equipment have raised concerns among researchers. According to them, the find is in a terrible state and threatens to leak toxic substances. The wreck of a small fishing vessel was also found near the find.

According to the experts involved in the case, the find, due to the fact that it is buried in the seabed, poses a much lower risk if explosives were to be unleashed than if it were located directly on the surface of the seabed. Nevertheless, there is a high risk that the fjord could be contaminated in the near future.

“The problem in this case is that this site is characterised by a lot of erosion. As a result, the objects at the bottom corrode and deteriorate, creating a hazard,” explains Terje Thorsnes of the Geological Survey of Norway.

Where did dumps of ammunition and explosives such as this come from? Well, after the war, it was legal and common practice to dump such items. Now it is time to face up to the consequences of those decisions and actions.
