Last weekend, on 30 May 2013, the German passenger ship MS Georg Buchner sank in the waters surrounding Cape Rozewie. The vessel, built in 1951, was not on another voyage, however, but on its way to the Lithuanian Klaipeda, where it was to be cut for scrap. These plans were complicated late in the evening around 8 p.m. 25 minutes later it disappeared under the surface of the water and settled at a depth of 35m.

Thus, wreck diving enthusiasts received an unexpected gift for Children’s Day. A huge wreck, 154m long and almost 20m wide, within the limits of no-decompression diving? It’s too good to be true.

And yet! With every passing hour, more and more information about the sinking of the German vessel came to light and the prospect of an interesting dive became very real. What’s more, we were very close to dealing with two new wrecks. For it was necessary to disconnect the tow on which Georg Buchner was being pulled in order to rescue the towing vessel.

On Wednesday, the Maritime Office in Gdynia is to begin examination of the wreck. However, as you can see from the materials posted on the web, “our people have already been there”. In addition to accounts of diving on the latest Baltic wreck, you can also find many interesting photos.

However, it may turn out that the optimism of the diving community is premature. The plans which the Maritime Office has for the wreck are focused around the issue of locating the wreck precisely, determining the dangers resulting from this situation and calling the owner to excavate and remove the wreck. If this does not happen within the next 6 months, the wreck will be removed with the insurer’s money and later scrapped. Profits from this will go to the state treasury.

Hurry to dive on wrecks, they disappear so quickly…
