Italian researchers working at Rome’s Sapienza University have developed an innovative system that will enable wireless communication underwater, over much greater distances than is possible with current technology.

At present, the possibility of underwater voice or file transfer using wireless methods is severely limited due to the short range offered by devices available on the market.

Everything is about to change with the WSENS system developed by the Italians. The new solution will enable fast data transmission over much longer distances than all the technologies used so far. Interestingly, the new system does not need any cables placed on the seabed, so it will not interfere in any way with marine life.

The developers intend to create a wide range of applications that will allow full use of the WSENS system. These include the ability to transmit audio or video in real time.

The creators also explain that their invention will allow the condition of a diver underwater to be monitored by, among other things, measuring the oxygen content of inhaled and exhaled air.
