The sunken collection of French artillery was found in the waters off the north side of the island of Pharos, famous for its lighthouse, considered one of the seven wonders of the world, which from ancient times until the earthquake of 1375 provided safety for passing ships.

Pistols, muskets and cannons are among the objects found. The findings so far indicate that all these objects were on the French ship La Patriot, which was part of Napoleon’s fleet during the expedition to Egypt in 1798.

All the fished items were transported to the Grand Egyptian Museum, where they will undergo conservation in the laboratory there, followed by more detailed visual inspection and examination.

This discovery sends a strong message to those responsible for cultural heritage in Egypt. For in the waters off Faros lie many more artefacts, next to which the French artillery collection is yesterday’s doom. We have reported on one such find, as well as about its subsequent excavation we have reported in the past.

Surrounding the island of Faros is an area of around 5000m², where artefacts dating back centuries to antiquity are scattered. All due to earthquakes, such as the one that stripped the island of its magnificent lighthouse, which at the time was the tallest building on Earth – 117m. As a result of these cataclysms, much of what was On the waterfront of ancient Alexandria also went under water and rests there to this day.
