The film What the Octopus Taught Me is a wonderful piece of work where Pippa Ehrlich and James Reed are responsible for the direction and screenplay. The picture tells the story of one very an unusual friendship. The protagonists here are a filmmaker and an octopus that lives in a seaweed forest off the coast of South Africa.
In My Octopus Teacher, a pair of filmmakers follow diver Craig Foster with his camera as he explores an underwater seaweed forest. During his dives in the waters surrounding the Cape Town coast, he meets one very unusual octopus. They strike up a bond that lays the groundwork for a brilliant documentary.
What I enjoyed most about this story was the story of positivity and hope between people and the natural world. It was an opportunity to expand people’s ideas of what the relationship between us and wildlife can be. – – said Pippa Ehrlich
If you haven’t had the opportunity to watch My Octopus Teacher so far, you definitely need to catch up. Certainly, the documentary can be called one of the most interesting and unusual nature films of recent years.
The film also won a number of other awards at prestigious film festivals and received critical acclaim. The Bafta and Producers Guild awards for best documentary are undoubtedly among the most important. Despite the strong competition, the documentary What the Octopus Taught Me has always been a favourite to win a statuette.
Craig Foster is an award-winning filmmaker and co-founder of Sea Change Project. He has dedicated the last nine years to daily diving without a wetsuit in the Atlantic Ocean. His goal has been to document the human body’s adaptation to the cold and to study the seaweeds that make up the local ecosystem.
