An unusual underwater museum has been opened in the coastal waters of Lanzarote, one of the seven main islands in the Canary Islands archipelago. It is the first of its kind created in Europe, and its author is British artist Jason deCaires Taylor, who has already created similar structures in Mexico and Grenada. The project is called “Portal” and is part of an underwater botanical garden.

The museum is accessible by the famous Playa de Las Coloradas, located on the southern part of Lanzarote. The easiest way to get there is from Marina Rubicón. More than 300 life-size human figures are waiting for divers who visit the museum under the blue surface of the water! The sculptures form a total of twelve installations. It took three years to create this wonderful underwater attraction.

Everything has been sunk to a depth of no more than 14 metres, so there is nothing to prevent divers, regardless of their qualifications, as well as freedivers and snoorklers, from unhurriedly exploring it.

The mirror reflects the moving surface of the ocean and the series of supports that support it have been designed to incorporate different compartments and ‘live stations’. All with the intention of attracting local fauna in the form of octopuses, sea urchins and smaller fish.

The collection of sculptures created aims to raise awareness of environmental protection and ecology, as well as the development of the surrounding underwater fauna and flora.
