Powerful conglomerate Wärtsilä will jointly Shanghai Bestway Marine Engineering Design Co Ltd design and build a state-of-the-art vessel dedicated specifically to divers and for underwater work and expeditions. The recipient of this unusual vessel for support of deep-sea underwater work is the China Shanghai Salvage Bureau, which deals with sea rescue and work in the Middle Kingdom. The ordered design is expected to offer a unique combination of capabilities, including the option to conduct underwater work at depths of 6000 metres! Among the tasks for which the vessel can be used are the retrieval of objects from the bottom, the laying of pipelines and various other underwater work using up to 24 saturation divers, 2 decompression chambers and 2 diving bells! This will be the first unit to offer such a wide range of underwater work capabilities.

“The new vessel will certainly be the most sophisticated in our entire fleet. It will operate in very deep waters and in very challenging conditions. We believe the project will meet all our expectations to achieve ultimate success,” – Huang Yan, director of Deep Diving Technology Development Center, said.

Wärtsilä has the necessary experience and an impressive track record in the design of similar units. The company has been in business for 40 years and has built more than 4,000 units, many of which are powered by natural gas.
