At the end of 2011, a new product by Mares – Matrix computer – had its premiere. The device enriched the offer of this popular diving brand, expanding it with an interesting alternative among the “watch” type dive computers.

The latest child of the Italian brand, it is dedicated to both recreational and technical divers. To operate and navigate through the intuitive menu, we use 4 buttons performing the following roles respectively: up, down, select, reject. The display is easy to read and complies with the standards of this class of computers, in addition, many of its settings are editable. The user has an influence not only on how particular elements are displayed but also on what parameters are to be shown.

During a dive, “Matrix” can handle up to 3 gases, which we can change underwater. We can also select air or gauge dive mode. The sampling frequency is 5s. There is also room for useful extras such as an electronic compass, a precise stopwatch, and a logbook to store data from 36 hours of diving. Mares Matrix is designed to perform its functions to a depth of 150m.

However, I decided to leave the most interesting for last. Matrix can be connected to our laptop or PC, using the included USB cable. This will help us with data transfer and… battery charging! As is the case with many other devices (e.g. mobile phones), the battery status can be restored by leaving the Matrix connected to e.g. a laptop, charger, solar battery or car charger for about 2 hours. This is an innovative solution, which is an interesting alternative to batteries that need to be replaced in authorized (or not) services.

To become a happy owner of Matrix we will have to spend $479/2100pln
