The Planet+ channel is showing a wonderful series The Life of the Baltic Sea, created by experienced Polish diver, photographer and filmmaker Jerzy Abramowicz. Traveling with the author through the successive episodes, we can learn about the wonderful world of our native sea, which, despite appearances, is beautiful, multicoloured and teeming with life.

As we can read on the station’s website:

“The waters of the Baltic are difficult to access due to their low transparency caused by abundant plankton blooms. Director Jerzy Abramowicz says that we are unaware of the wealth of fauna and flora in our sea. He has been studying the underwater world for over thirty years, and in the series “Life of the Baltic” he shows the Baltic nature in all its biodiversity.

The Baltic Sea is still alive, even though it has been undergoing major environmental changes for many years. The negative effects of increasing pollution have been observed for several decades, with extensive deep-sea deserts and the exclusion of some beaches from recreational use.

The species composition of the fauna and flora in shallow sea areas is also changing, especially near estuaries and in sheltered bays. Sensitive species are giving way to more resistant organisms. Almost 100 new species, previously absent from the Baltic, have appeared. The dominance of unwanted newcomers is an indicator of an unfavourable sozological situation and threatens the preservation of biodiversity inherent in our sea.”

On behalf of Jurek and ourselves, we would like to invite everyone to watch and comment on subsequent episodes of the series. The best way to express your appreciation is to vote with your high rating at the link!
