As we travel through the underwater world and encounter its inhabitants, we are almost always in awe. Extraordinary creatures, colourful inhabitants of the reefs, fish, corals, crabs, turtles… an infinite number of wonderful life. It should be remembered, however, that some inhabitants of the depths are deadly and you should keep a safe distance from them. One such animal is the laticauda colubrina – the oarfish viper.

This unusual creature inhabits warm Indo-Pacific waters. It can be recognised by its interesting blue-grey colouration, interspersed with black stripes. Its body is crowned with a characteristic yellow snout.

It spends most of its life underwater hunting, but returns to land to digest its meal and reproduce. Its venom contains a very strong neurotoxin, which it uses to hunt various eels and small fish. Because of its attachment to land, it often encounters humans on its path. Fortunately, it is not aggressive and only attacks in self-defence when approached at a very short distance.

The Viper’s Viper’s Viper reaches up to about 1 metre in length for males and almost 1.5 metres in length for females.
