By far the biggest change can be seen in KUBI’s standard dry glove kit, which now comes without all the plastic packaging. KUBI have gone much further than simply replacing plastic bags with more environmentally friendly alternatives – they have gone back to the drawing board to create a solution and answer the question of how best to deliver the product in a way that significantly reduces environmental impact. The outer plastic bag, header card and staples have been completely removed and replaced with an attractive, 100% recyclable cardboard label attached directly to the KUBI carry-on bag. Inside, the main components now come in sealed paper bags.
The KUBI dry glove accessory range has undergone a similar transformation, removing all plastic packaging. All KUBI accessory products, will be supplied in sealed paper bags, colour coded using water based inks. Major components, including KUBI aluminium rings and gaskets, will be supplied in red paper bags, while latex outer gloves will be supplied in black. Thermal glove liners, on the other hand, will be packaged in orange bags, reflecting the warming nature of the gloves. All paper bags used in the range are 100% recyclable.
“Plastic pollution is a very real threat to the environment and especially to the oceans. That’s why KUBI took the bold decision to take a stand on this issue. Working with key suppliers, we looked at what options might be available to provide a more sustainable product. By removing the plastics traditionally used to package our dry gloves and accessories, we will not only reduce our own, but also our customers’ environmental impact. It’s simply about doing the right things. We believe we have taken a big step in the right direction. “- said Peter Wilson of KUBI.
The problem of plastic pollution and its long-term impact on the environment has received considerable media attention in recent times. Divers in particular are very aware of the problem. Studies show that between 8 and 12 million tonnes of plastic enter our oceans each year and once there, pose a serious threat to countless marine animals, birds and other organisms. Over time, this same plastic breaks down into tiny particles that absorb the toxins released into the water. These so-called ‘microplastics’ contain high levels of toxins that can enter the food chain, causing a ticking toxic bomb.
