The excavated equipment was secured and subjected to preservation to protect the object from corrosion. According to the available information, the found machine was part of a pile driver, which was used to drive piles into the bottom of the canal, where it was found. Interestingly, the manufacturer – the company Menck und Hambrock from Hamburg – is still in business.

“The steam engine was located at a depth of 13m and was perfectly preserved. At the bottom of the machine is the so-called baba, a device for driving piles. The truss fell apart because it was already very corroded,” explains Aleksander Ostasz, who is in charge of the archaeological supervision of the works carried out on the Piast Canal.

As Aleksander Ostasz further explains, contact with the manufacturer has been successfully established. At the moment, materials concerning the device are being obtained, which will allow us to learn as much as possible about the find.

The work at the site was carried out with the knowledge and consent of the West Pomeranian Voivodship Conservator of Monuments by the UW Service Company in collaboration with the companies Escort from Szczecin and Diving Aleksander Ostasz /Archeo Divers Szczecin.
