“Calypso” – this name is associated by everyone who has even a cursory knowledge of Jaques Cousteau and his research expeditions. It was from aboard this ship that the legendary diving pioneer led his extraordinary expeditions. One might even say that the ship has become as recognisable as Jaques Cousteau’s red cap. Until recently, her further fate was uncertain due to an ongoing court battle over ownership rights. Eventually, the Calypso ended up in the hands of the legendary explorer’s widow.
Today it is already known that the vessel will become part of the fleet of an organisation run by the descendants of Jaques Cousteau – the Cousteau Society. According to the new owners, it is only a matter of months, appropriate repairs and preparations, for “Calypso” to be back on the water. So all fans of “The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau” series, can breathe a sigh of relief. The boat, so dear to your hearts, will continue the mission started by its legendary owner, thus providing knowledge and entertainment for generations to come.
The fate of the ‘Calypso’ became uncertain after an accident in 1996. The ship was severely damaged in Singapore after a large barge hit it. All that is now in the past and, as Jaques Cousteau’s heirs have announced, the “Calypso” will be seen on the water in the first trimester of 2016.
The ship served as a British minesweeper in the first chapter of its life. However, by the 1950s, it had already been made a legendary French explorer by Irish millionaire Thomas Guinness. The ship was then converted into a floating laboratory and television studio. It didn’t take long for ‘Calypso’ to become one of the most famous vessels on Earth over the next two decades. Documentary videos made with her participation made millions of children, teenagers and adults fall in love with the underwater world. Probably more than one person watching “The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau” will soon set out to conquer the depths themselves.
We don’t know all the details of the refurbishment, but the ship will definitely receive new volvo engines. We can expect that in addition to the new propulsion system, there will be some slightly more ‘up-to-date’ equipment for research and exploration, as well as modern equipment for creating video footage. There is nothing left for us to do but wait for the first voyage, the first research expedition and its results, which we will be able to admire as we have in the past.
