Japan: divers filmed an encounter with a giant squid – video

A group of divers from Japan were very lucky to encounter a giant squid during their dive. Encounters with one of the largest molluscs inhabiting the Earth are extremely rare, especially in the limits in which recreational or technical divers operate. It is all the more fortunate that during this unusual encounter, the divers were equipped with a camera and captured this unusual animal on video.

The giant squid is a creature known both from literature, history and legends, as well as Hollywood productions. It is a mysterious ‘monster’ that inhabits the deep sea, from where it rarely ventures into the shallower parts of the oceans. This is evidenced by the fact that it was only in 2012 that the animal was captured on camera for the first time.

The more surprised and delighted the divers in Toyama Bay must have been when this huge, majestic and fearsome-looking animal appeared before their eyes. But miracles do happen, especially on such a special day as 24 December. You could say that the divers got an unexpected Christmas present.

From the divers’ reports and the video recording, it was initially determined that the squid is a very young individual, measuring just 3.7 metres long (the largest individual found dead off the coast of New Zealand in 1887 was 18 metres long!).

“The animal looked healthy and full of energy. It gushed ink and tried to wrap its tentacles around my body. I walked it towards the ocean a few hundred metres from where it was found, then it disappeared into the depths,” – reports Akinobu Kimura, a diver and owner of a local dive shop who recorded the unusual encounter.

No one knows why the animal has ventured so far from the waters where it lives every day. Researchers still know very little about the creatures that inhabit the deepest parts of the oceans.
