Media owned by Italian media giant Mediaset are reporting the disappearance of a statue of the legendary Christ from the deep. The bronze statue was located at a depth of 17 metres, at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea.

The disappearance of the monument, which weighed almost 15 kilos, was discovered by divers from the “Orsa Minore” association in Lanciano, Abruzzo, who dived in on Sunday 3 June to carry out its conservation. However, there was not even a trace of the 80cm bronze statue.

Christ of the Deep, by the famous sculptor Vito Pancella, appeared at the bottom of the waters of Vallevò harbour, in Rocca San Giovanni, on 7 August 1994. Since then it has become a local attraction drawing many tourists and even becoming the site of an underwater wedding.

Last year, the sculpture was brought to the surface, where it underwent conservation and the necessary repairs. After conservation, Christ of the Deep was put on display for a week in the local town hall.

After that time, the statue went back under water to continue to act as an underwater attraction. Unfortunately, as it turned out, not for very long… For the time being, there is no information other than that of the disappearance. We do not know who and when took the statue of Christ from the sea bottom. We can only hope that the police will manage to recover it.
