A wreck discovered at the bottom of the Black Sea off the Crimean coast may turn out to be a British battleship sunk during the Crimean War. Russian archaeologists exploring the waters near the city of Eupatoria have found its trace. In their own words, the area is a veritable graveyard of ships. Historians suspect that it was this vessel, more than 160 years ago, that could have carried a shipment of gold.

A number of other wrecks have been found in the region, and three of them have been identified. These are also ships involved in 19th century clashes during the Crimean War.

Experts studying wrecks suppose that the latest discovery is a vessel, in the hold of which there should be thirty barrels (barrels?!) with gold. Preliminary examination allows to classify the wreck as a part of the anti-Russian coalition, namely as a ship belonging to the British Empire.

The attached video shows wooden fragments of an old ship, which has been described as the ‘Black Sea Prince (Its remains were discovered less than one mile from the shore, in the vicinity of four other wrecks. Unfortunately, their identification will not be possible without more detailed research. Two of them were provisionally classified as French vessels.

At the moment we are investigating five ships. We already knew about two in 2013. As we assume, they must have sunk during a strong storm on 14 November 1854. Near the wrecks we discovered fragments of brass plating, as well as a wooden tobacco pipe, the age of which was determined to be mid-19th century,”-Victor Vakhoneev – deputy director of the Black Sea Underwater Research Center – told journalists of the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper.

According to historical accounts, during the aforementioned storm, the anti-Russian coalition troops lost a total of ten units.

The Crimean War was fought between the Russian Empire and the Ottoman Empire and its allies Britain, France and the Kingdom of Sardinia and lasted from 16 October 1853 to 30 March 1856.
