Great new discoveries at the Baja Archaeological Park! – video

Archaeologists have made some stunning new discoveries during excavations at an ancient Roman resort at the bottom of the Gulf of Naples in Italy. Further artefacts have been brought to the surface, which will be examined by specialists and subjected to cleaning and conservation.

The work was carried out by park staff, the Locamare di Baia Port Authority and Naumacos Underwater Archaeology. Among the latest finds was a trapezoforo, which is a marble table base decorated with a cat’s head. The artefact, once excavated, was immediately transported to Castello di Baja for examination and preservation.

“The sunken Baja park still holds many surprises. We interpret today’s discovery as an auspicious sign for the new season, which, once reopened, must follow a path towards further development. For an archaeologist, the discovery of a find is always a cause for joy and excitement. After the first necessary conservation treatments, the exhibit will be presented to the public in the archaeological museum at the Baja Castle.” said park director Fabio Pagano

The history of Baja goes back a long way, back to before the beginning of our era. There are many traces sunken in the sea bed, testifying to the centuries-long history of this region. These include anchors dating from the end of the Bronze Age to the beginning of the Iron Age. Baja is also a beautiful example of the rich history of Campania and testifies to the high status of the area in ancient Rome.

In the heyday of the empire, the Roman emperors and other prominent citizens were particularly fond of this holiday resort. Traces of Baja’s popularity survive to this day in numerous legends and historical sources. In the first centuries AD the region flourished with the power of Rome. It even avoided destruction by the legendary eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in 79.

Unfortunately, with the decline of the empire and the Gothic wars, also the area of the Phlegrian Fields, where the resort was located, fell into poverty and oblivion. The destruction was completed in the 8th century by the Muslim invasion and the phenomenon of bradyseism (gradual subsidence of the Earth’s surface). The once shining Baja ended up at the bottom of the Gulf of Naples, where its ruins and mysteries lie to this day.

The first archaeological investigations began here in the 1960s. However, it was not until the 1980s that they were carried out on a large scale. As a result of the findings, it was possible to locate the remains of a huge naval and commercial port Portus Julius and many other interesting objects, including villas belonging to prominent Roman citizens. The work is carried out annually, allowing us to continue to deepen our knowledge of this extraordinary site and to bring back to light artefacts that were submerged centuries ago.
