The main motivation for the volunteer divers at Ghost Diving Poland is the wish to protect the Baltic Sea. One of many threats to these waters is lost or abandoned fishing gear. This is the situation we are confronted with as active and passionate wreck divers.
On almost every shipwreck we find ghost nets. In nearly every ghost net, we find entangled fish and other animals or their remains. This is why Ghost Diving Poland removes ghost fishing gear – to make the Baltic Sea safer for underwater fauna.
The Baltic Sea is a sanctuary of a wide array of historical shipwrecks. We believe it is important to take better care of local wrecks. An underwater curtain of ghost nets can look majestic – this is true. However, we must remember that behind that veil lies the true history of the wrecks we are diving on. That historical heritage is often hidden by layers of ghost nets, obscuring all the details.
During our projects, we often discover interesting elements of wrecks that had been never documented before. You could say that our recent projects have allowed us to rediscover several well-known wrecks.
Another motivation for the removal of ghost nets is enhancing the safety of scuba divers. Not only fish can get entangled in old fishing gear, but also divers. Getting tangled in nets that are hanging on wrecks is dangerous, especially for less experienced individuals.
We hope that in this way, in addition to promoting environmental protection, we also contribute to the promotion of diving in the Polish waters of the Baltic Sea.
A dedicated group of experienced divers committed to cleaning the Baltic Sea of ghost nets—abandoned fishing nets that pose a significant threat to marine life. By focusing on removing these hazardous nets from shipwrecks and other underwater areas, they contribute significantly to marine conservation efforts. Their work not only helps protect marine ecosystems but also raises awareness about the impact of marine debris.
Abandoned or lost fishing nets that drift through the oceans, posing a severe threat to marine life. These nets continue to trap and kill fish, turtles, seabirds, and other marine creatures long after they have been discarded, leading to what is known as “ghost fishing.” Made from durable materials, ghost nets can persist in the marine environment for decades, causing extensive ecological damage. Efforts to remove and recycle these nets are crucial in mitigating their impact, helping to preserve marine biodiversity and maintain healthy ocean ecosystems. Ghost nets are a significant environmental issue, with estimates suggesting that between 500,000 and one million tons of these abandoned fishing nets enter the oceans annually.
