A dozen divers, acting under the aegis of Ghost Diving and Healthy Seas, removed ghost nets that lingered near the Istrian Peninsula in Croatia.
From Sunday 19 June to Thursday 23 June, a group of 14 Ghost Diving and Healthy Seas divers cleaned up the waters around Istra peninsula in Croatia. During this time they carried out a number of dives, which included the removal of stripped ghost nets.
The diving volunteers focused on the wreck of the SS Vis and the surrounding reef during their activities. Over the past decades, a lot of fishing gear has been lost by local fishermen at both sites. The accumulation of ghost nets is always a major threat to local fauna and divers. Therefore, it was necessary to solve the problem as soon as possible.
From a depth of 60m, where the sunken wreck of the SS Vis vessel rests, divers have retrieved a 100m-long sardine net. Without doubt, this is considerable achievement. Normally, volunteers search for fishing gear only to a depth of 40m. It was also a logistically complex operation, as two vessels had to be combined and used to retrieve the net from the sea.
In addition to the large net, divers removed several hundred metres of trammel net and lobster cage from the waters around Istra peninsula. All this lost fishing gear was lying on a nearby reef. During these activities, volunteers freed various animals from the nets, including octopus, grouper, crabs and catfish, among others.
A team of volunteers under the aegis of Ghost Diving and Healthy Seas was formed by divers from Croatia, Germany, Austria, Italy and the Netherlands.
