Just as it is developing at the University of Warsaw Underwater ArchaeologyUniversity of Warsaw, the conference in this field organised here is also gaining momentum. The first edition, then still under the name Warsaw Underwater Archaeology Forum for Students and PhD Students (23.04.2014), was held mainly in Polish, although we also hosted young researchers from Ukraine. Next (14-15.01.2017) was not only two days long, but also much more diverse, although still organised with a rather limited ‘doctoral’ budget.
Nevertheless, it was a considerable success and guests from many parts of the world turned up. The scientific guidance of experienced scientists ensured a really high level of underwater archaeologists meeting in Warsaw. The last one, third event, was already funded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education (959/P-DUN/2018), which enabled a more professional organisation. Abstracts of all 2019 presentations, as well as photo galleries from previous editions, are available on the website of the Underwater Expedition University of Warsaw.
After numerous perturbations and deliberations it was decided that the fourth meeting of underwater archaeologists in Warsaw will take place in the autumn, 18-20 November 2021. This time we are also working with funding from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education (DNK/SN/464684/202). Although the realities of a pandemic are not conducive to travel, among those reported so far we have not only researchers from Poland. There will also be guests from Greece, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, the British Isles, Slovenia, Italy, Croatia and Montenegro. And the call is still on!
As with the previous edition, when we were visited by distinguished special guests Iván Negueruela Martínez – Director of the Museum of Underwater Archaeology in Cartagena, M. Nicolas Caretta from the Bornholm Museum and Vladas Žulkus from the University of Klaipeda, we are also looking forward to the arrival of excellence in this field of science this time. So far we can confirm a special lecture by a researcher from the Moesgaard Museum in Denmark, Dr. Xenia Paula Jensen, who will grace the panel on underwater and marsh cult sites, a talk by a guest from Spain, Dr. Carlos de Juan, who will talk about the wreck of the Mazarron 2, and Dr. Derek Hamilton from the University of Glasgow (SUERC Radiocarbon Laboratory), who will give a lecture “Living on Water: Scientific Dating and Early Iron Age Dwelling on a Scottish Highland Loch”opening the panel “Water for Living”. More surprises to come soon!
We very much hope that the pandemic will not stand in the way of another great scientific event at the UW, and the meeting of underwater archaeologists in Warsaw will take place. However, we have prepared for this eventuality and moved to virtual reality.
In the meantime, we invite you to apply to participate by Google form. “Final” deadline for entries is 31 May 2021, but if you wish to apply later, please contact email. The Organising Committee will be happy to answer any questions!
It is worth mentioning that the obligation to register also applies to the listeners, if they wish to take part in the accompanying events and receive conference materials, and it is really worth it! As always, we are planning interesting “additions” to the lecture panels, about which we will keep you informed.
Of course, the lectures themselves are open to listeners at no extra charge, in which case there is no need to register!
The conference, already traditionally, takes place in English.
In addition to website all current information is published by the organiser on event website i fanpage on FB. Through the latter channel you can also follow latest news about underwater archaeology in Poland and in the world.
It is worth mentioning that the meeting of underwater archaeologists in Warsaw is also connected with the book “Archaeology: Just Add Water”. Its two previous volumes are available to download, while the call for articles for the third volume lasts until the end of May 2021. More information about it is on the website and Facebook event. We invite you to contact us.
