Local press from the Mazury region is reporting that Lake Dejnowo may soon unveil its secrets hidden since World War II. The reservoir, located near Święta Lipka, will be examined by employees of the Gdańsk-based “Latebra” Foundation for the Recovery of Lost Works of Art.

The search for this particular location is no accident. They were preceded by solid work on historical archives and appropriate preparations. Maps, available documents and interviews with local residents were analysed.

It is mentioned that a column of German vehicles (a vehicle?), coming from the direction of Bezlawki or Pieckowo, which wanted to bypass Swieta Lipka, entered the ice in the place of the greatest narrowing of the lake and sank there. One clue suggests that they might have been part of a column of General Friedrich Hossbach’s 4th German Army staff, which was moving from the “Wolf’s Lair” to a new headquarters in the village of Borki, west of Bartoszyce. An interesting clue is the repeated oral information about divers who, in the years after the war, while looking for a drowning person, came across a heavily silted military vehicle lying on the bottom. – said Mariusz Kwiatkowski, a well-known local history enthusiast

Now will be the opportunity to find out whether there is a grain of truth in these stories, or whether it all boils down to the classic tale of a plane and a tank resting in every lake. Solid preparations, an experienced team on site and the use of appropriate equipment should leave no shadow of doubt in this matter.

The magnetometer research focused on the narrowing of Dejnowa Lake, in a place suggesting the existence of a bridge or a ferry crossing. Unfortunately, there is no mention of either a bridge or a ferry in the archival sources,” says Mariusz Kwiatkowski

From the information that has been made public so far, we know that the magnetometer surveys have located a very clear signal, detected between the edges of the body of water. This is therefore an important starting point and a place that the members of the Foundation will certainly be exploring as a matter of priority.

Finally, on behalf of the Foundation for the Recovery of Lost Works of Art “Latebra”, we would like to ask our readers to contact us and pass on any information they have about the events that took place in this area in January 1945 and any known details about the story mentioned in the text with the divers who came across the sunken vehicle.
