During one of our underwater rafting trips on the Krutynia River, one of our druids suggested: “Guys, why don’t we clean the river bed? Do you see how much rubbish there is?”. The idea really appealed to Commander Marek and there was no turning back, the implementation became a fact.

We were told “Marcin try to find out if others will support this idea”. The next day, dressed in diving equipment, we met again on the bank of the Krutynia River to take pictures and present evidence that the riverbed is indeed polluted. Then we went to the Mayor with the evidence in hand. The idea that was born in our heads received the approval of the Mayor of Ruciane-Nida.

The first organisational meeting with the participation of companies conducting tourist activities related to the use of the Krutynia River, a representative of the Mazurian Landscape Park and the Mayor of Ruciane-Nida was held on 23 August 2011. All invited guests expressed their willingness to help organise the rafting trip.

Preparations began in earnest. The main organizational burden was taken by the TSO Water and Diving Group in Ruciane-Nida, the diving school MazuryDiving and the Mayor of Ruciane-Nida. Our idea was not indifferent to numerous sponsors, without whom our action would not have a chance to exist.

On 24 September 2011, the 1st Firefighters’ Campaign to Clean up the Krutynia River took place. Twenty-three divers participated in it. They were firefighters and civilians. In addition to divers from Ruciane-Nida OSP there were divers from KM PSP in Warsaw from JRG-1, OSP Miłki, a representative of the Police Station in Ruciane-Nida, the Polom Society, BA SYSTEM from Gdańsk and other people representing diving communities in our area.

The divers were protected by the following units: Ruciane-Nida TSO, Ukta TSO, Wejsuny TSO, Karwica TSO and representatives of Wojnowo village (Councillor and Mayor). At 9:00 a.m. we – the divers and the security team and the invited guests, meet at the Ruciane-Nida TSO fire station. At 11:00 the event is officially opened by the Mayor of Ruciane-Nida Zbigniew Janusz Opalach, and then the equipment is packed and the last preparations are made.

At 11:30 we report by radio to the District Control Station in Pisz for the “First Firefighters’ Campaign to Clean up the Krutynia River”. A column of 5 fire engines sets off from the fire station in Ruciane-Nida. At the site in Ukta, Drugs from Ukta and Karwica Voluntary Fire Brigades are waiting for us.

After arriving at the site, we unpack our dive gear, get changed and wait for the pre-dive briefing. Each of us signs a consent to dive, then we split into two groups. One group goes to Wojnowo, where they start cleaning the river; the other group starts from the bridge in Ukta.

After about two hours both groups meet at the village beach in Ukta, the divers exchange observations and comments. Warm tea and a meal await everyone. After the participants regain their strength, the 1st Firefighters’ Campaign to Clean up the Krutynia River is summed up. Prizes are drawn among the participants and each participant receives a commemorative diploma. During the prize draw, an announcement is made about the amount of rubbish collected. The result is an impressive 360 kg.

The official part of the rafting trip ends and the village picnic in Ukta begins. The SHD-25 aerial vehicle from the District Command of the State Fire Service in Pisz appears on the spot. To the delight of children and adults, the lift can be driven “up to the sky”. The festival in Ukta ends late in the evening. From the words of organisers, sponsors and participants: … this was the “1st Firefighters’ Campaign of Krutynia River Cleaning,” but certainly not the last one. The next edition is planned for spring 2012.
