Herbert Nitsch’s attempt to break his own world record in the No Limits category failed. The Austrian tried to attack the depth of 244m in the Greek Santorini, but after an unsuccessful approach he ended up in a hyperbaric chamber.

After an immersion of 4min and 20s, the freediver emerged visibly weakened and immediately asked for oxygen, with which he returned for water. There he performed his standard decompression protocol and returned to the surface.

Unfortunately, his wellbeing as a diver has not improved. The condition he was in forced a visit to a decompression chamber in Athens, where he is now recovering. The latest information coming from the Greek capital, allows those who trembled about the fate of the athlete to breathe. As it turns out, after being taken to the Athens hospital, Herbert Nitsch was conscious and spoke coherently.

According to the last-minute information from the manager taking care of the athlete, we can learn that Herbert reached the record depth and then continued ascending without any problems. The difficulties started at a depth of about 10m. Then the freediver was taken care of by his support.

Due to the failure to meet surface protocol, the attempt cannot be counted as successful (by AIDA standards), but in the absence of AIDA judges, the 244m descent should be considered a record, however unofficial.
