This weekend, on February 10-11, 2012, in Olsztyn, a unique on a global scale competition in free diving will be held. Usually, we associate freediver competition with the warm waters of the Bahamas, Greece or Australia. This belief is quite correct and in 99.99% of cases, this is the case. There is still that tiny percentage of 00.01% who break out of all the standards. This is Extremall Freediving!

The harsh conditions that the cold Polish winter is serving up are dealing with everything. They shut down schools, disable cars, keep people indoors and give headaches to the municipal authorities, which have to ensure the safety of their residents by putting out coke ovens on the streets, known to many only from newsreels.

In the frostiest region of Poland, there is a group of 36 freedivers, who don’t mind the conditions outside the window. It is they who, on Saturday 11 February, will be competing against each other in a free diving competition… under the ice!

On the Kortowski Lake, popular with the students of the University of Warmia and Mazury as well as with the citizens of Olsztyn, the top Polish freedivers, together with young students of this art will make not only the competitors but also the whole freediving community hold their breath!

The only freediving competition held in winter raises a lot of excitement in the community and also among outsiders. The organisers invite everyone to come to the university town of Kortowo and cheer the competitors on to fight for the best results. It is important to remember that this is not a local walrus club, but top-class professionals, among whom there are three current world vice-champions – Mateusz Malina, Emilia Biała and Adrian Kwiatkowski.
