2016 promises to be an extremely interesting year for all extreme cave diving enthusiasts. All thanks to Expedition Bjurälven, scheduled for this year, which aims to explore the cave system located in the Jämtland mountains. This will be the 9th expedition to uncover the secrets of what is probably the longest flooded cave in Sweden.

We have a special surprise for our readers this year. The text you are reading is just a preview of what you will be able to find about the expedition on our website. Thanks to our secret contact in Scandinavia, we will be able to provide “live” reports on the individual days of this exciting expedition.

An interesting fact is that one of the two main sponsors of this year’s expedition is a Polish company! We are talking about the well-known X-deep. It is in sidemount harnesses of this brand, that the participants will conduct dives in the Bjurälven cave. For people following diving research projects, the participation of X-deep should not be any surprise, the company has been supporting similar initiatives around the world for a number of years.

Another nice touch for us is that members of the Swedish group Divers of the Dark have joined the expedition. Antti Apunen and Janne Suhonen are two exceptional guests whom we had the opportunity to meet during the Baltictech 2013 conference, after which we repeatedly presented their wonderful films and photos taken during extremely difficult cave dives. Knowing that they are part of this year’s expedition, we can be sure that there will be no shortage of great shots both above and below the water.

For those who have not yet heard of Expedition Bjurälven and cannot imagine the scale of the difficulty of the entire undertaking, we would like to inform you that simply reaching the flooded cave located in the north-western part of the Jämtland range is a real feat. Due to the lack of any roads or human settlements, everything has to be taken with you and transported by snowmobile, the only means of transport able to cope with such difficult conditions.
