Excavation of telegraph from Titanic wreck postponed

A planned expedition to the wreck of the liner RMS Titanic to retrieve Marconi’s historic telegraph has been postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and associated restrictions.

The past year has seen a lot of publicity about the controversial plan to rescue the Marconi wireless telegraph from destruction in the deep, put forward by the company holding the rights to the wreck, RMS Titanic Inc. The expedition was scheduled to take place in the summer of 2021, but has had to be postponed due to circumstances surrounding the epidemiological threat.

We learned of this turn of events from an official statement presented by a representative of RMS Titanic Inc. on Friday 29 January. It states, among other things, that the main reasons for this turn of events are “the increasing difficulties of international travel and logistics and the associated health risks for the expedition team”.

It is an open secret, however, that the company has had considerable difficulty raising the funds to organise and carry out an expedition to the wreck of the Titanic, and the whole operation has also been hampered by the fact that, due to the pandemic, it is now extremely limited in its ability to launch and open to the public an exhibition with artifacts brought to the surface, implicitly to make a profit.

RMS Titanic Inc. also failed to submit a business plan by the required deadline of 29 January 2021, as required by the US court that granted conditional approval for the entire project.

The issue of telegraph mining was controversial from the outset, and the plan itself had both supporters and opponents. Of course, as is usual in such cases, everything ended up in court, which finally The court, however, upheld the Titanic RMS Inc. and allowed the expedition.

It is worth noting that even the descendants and families of the victims of the tragedy that occurred in April 1912 They sided with the company, pointing out that it is necessary to preserve the memory and save from destruction important artefacts, such as the telegraph of the Italian company Marconi, which played a key role in saving more than 700 passengers.
