Egypt: authorities reverse visa amendments
Listen to this article

On 18 March 2015, we reported on changes to visas to Egypt that were to come into force as early as mid-May. As it turns out, the Egyptian authorities have decided to withdraw for the time being from the controversial project, which involved major changes for individual tourists travelling to the land of the pharaohs.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has decided to postpone a controversial project introducing changes to visa traffic. This is the result of consultations between stakeholders and representatives of several travel agencies,” reads an official statement from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry

On 17 March, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry announced the changes it plans to introduce in the near future. These would primarily affect individual tourists travelling to Egypt. Under the new regulations, such people would have to apply for a visa before leaving the country by contacting the Egyptian embassy.

Fortunately for travellers, everything will remain the same and an Egyptian visa can be purchased on arrival at Cairo International Airport, as has been the case until now.

This does not mean that changes will not be made. For the time being, they have been postponed to coincide with the introduction of the new electronic visa system.
