Dr Guy Garman’s attempt to break the record for the deepest open water dive on Saturday ended tragically. “Doc Deep” failed to turn up at the site where deep support was to await him. The news of the diver’s demise was reported by other participants in the project including Garman’s son, who acted as one of the safety divers.

The aim of the dive was to beat the depth record (332.35m) set by Egyptian Ahmed Gabr and reach a depth of 365 metres. The dive went according to plan, a team of safety divers including the son of “Doc Deep” escorted him to a depth of 60m. 38 minutes later, the diver should have met his support team at a depth of 110m, unfortunately he did not turn up.

The dive was conducted in the waters of the Caribbean Sea, near the island of St Croix, part of the US Virgin Islands archipelago.

Dr Guy Garman entered the water at 6am on Saturday 15 August. The runtime was planned for10 h 25 min, during which the diver was to reach a depth of 365 m and return safely to the surface. Unfortunately, for unknown reasons, this did not happen. The safety team and a few divers alarmed by the situation decided to start a search, hoping that the worst could be avoided and the whole situation was just a serious delay.

Doc Deep was connected to the surface by a rope measuring about 400m, so ascending to another remote location was not an option. Due to the equipment needed for the entire operation, the diver’s body will be extracted this week.

“I must say that we are all terribly saddened by what has happened. Whether or not anyone agrees with Guy’s stated aim and the desirability of conducting such dives, everyone must remember what an experienced diver ‘Doc Deep’ was. I don’t know if there is another person in the world who could match him in terms of knowledge of diving, especially very deep and technical diving.” – said “Captain Ed”, a member of the Garman team.

Guy Garman’s death added to this week’s tragic tally, where a total of three divers died on St Coix, population 50,000.
