Diving instructors from the “Skorpena” Academic Diving Club and staff from the UWM Department of Botany and Nature Conservation have come up with a very interesting initiative for UWM students. The action “You’re studying? You dive for free” is to encourage students of the University of Warmia and Mazury to spend their free time actively.

“We want to popularise scuba diving, and if the participants like the classes, we will invite others to join the “Skorpena” Academic Scuba Diving Club” – says Piotr Dynowski, PhD, from the Department of Botany and Nature Protection of the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology at UWM, a scuba diving instructor from “Skorpena”

This unique offer is addressed to all students and employees of the Olsztyn University. All you need to do is fill in the appropriate form concerning your state of health and come to the headquarters of AKP “Skorpena” in Kortów. On the spot you will be introduced to the theory and equipment for diving. The classes are free of charge and “Skorpena” also provides equipment such as masks, fins, regulators and cylinders.

“After a theory briefing at the club, we head to the university swimming pool. We have 2 lanes reserved there. And… off we go! The safety of the students is supervised by instructors from Skorpena. This is our job for the university. Such full scuba diving classes give a taste of what you can learn on a full diving course ” – encourages dr P. Dynowski.

In addition to encouraging people to spend their free time actively diving, the organisers also encourage and create opportunities to pursue their diving passions in the scientific field.

“For those who are passionate about scuba diving, there awaits our Student Scientific Circle of Underwater Research “Hydronautic” operating at the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology. Although the club is young, as it has existed for only 5 months, we have already taken part in research on the habitats of the bitterling. It is an indicator species – it shows the state of water quality (purity). Members of the club are assessing the abundance and condition of the habitat of this small fish in lakes Kortowski, Leginski and Mutek. We are also planning to continue work on the inventory of ichthyofauna in the waters of the Tatra National Park. Members of the Circle will be able to participate in this research. As a member of the Circle, you do not necessarily have to dive. A lot of work is also done from a boat”. – adds P. Dynowski, Ph.

The campaign “You study? You dive for free!” started in 2014 and now we are dealing with its third installment. According to the information provided by the organisers, so far about 200 people have taken advantage of this unusual offer.

The initiative has no deadline and you can join at any time. Just write a message to the official profile of AKP “Skorpena” or visit their headquarters(DS1 at ul. Kanafojskiego 3) on Wednesday at 20.15.

More information is available on 508 123 849 or 502 846 907.
