In the waters of the Ligurian Sea lies a truly spectacular wreck. We are talking about a colossal supertanker “Amoco Milford Haven”. The vessel sank on 14 April 1991, after a pump was damaged during the transfer of oil, which led to the outbreak of a huge fire.

Measuring 334 metres long and 51 metres wide, the ship is now lying at a depth of between 33 and 88 metres. The Haven’s 45-metre bow was blown off while the fire was still raging. At the time of the disaster, the tanks contained 144,244 tonnes of Iranian crude oil, which could have produced up to 40 million litres of vehicle fuel!

The result of these events was the greatest environmental disaster that has ever occurred in the Mediterranean. Approximately 20 km of coastline were contaminated and the fire was extinguished for several consecutive days.

The tanker was built in 1973, at the Astilleros Espagnoles shipyard in Spain. It was one of four giant tankers built to order for the Amoco Transport Company of Chicago.

Today, the wreck of the “Amoco Milford Haven” is the largest vessel lying on the seabed, and in addition accessible to divers. Of course, amateurs of the underwater world who come to Arenzano make the most of this fact and the ship is a frequent destination of diving excursions.
