A group of divers and archaeologists are planning to make a symbolic dive on the Holland 5 submarine wreck to mark the 100th anniversary of its sinking. The wreck is located in waters near Eastbourn in East Sussex County and is under strict protection.
The dive is organised by the Nautical Archaeology Society and the Tunbrige Wells diving club. All the action will be carried out on August 8, this year. The date is no coincidence and falls exactly on the 100th anniversary of the sinking of HMS Hollland 5, when the vessel was towed to Sheerness to be scrapped.
The wreck was discovered in 1995 at a depth of about 30m. The ship had settled to the bottom about six miles from shore. The anniversary dive, as well as celebrating the event itself, will aim to explore what condition HMS Holland 5 is in.
Having settled on its keel, the ship is in almost intact condition since its sinking. The only risk it is exposed to is the effects of surrounding minesweeping, which has already caused minor damage.
