If you are not familiar with Diversnight, let us remind you that it takes place every year on the first Saturday in November. Its purpose is to dive together at night. The time of entering the water is determined by the calendar and so, in 2017, it was… 20.17 local time, for each of the registered dives.
At first glance it is clear that after last year’s edition, which in terms of attendance was extremely poor, especially compared to those organised in previous years, there is a noticeable progression. Of the 1140 divers from 23 countries taking part in Diversnight 2016, we managed to pull the result up to… 1780 people who entered the water!
The number of countries where Diversnight was celebrated remained unchanged. However, it is worth noting that the number of diving sites went from 114 in 2016, up to 157!
All it took to take part in the event was a little desire, a minimum of formalities and a willingness to spend time together with the local diving team.
As it usually happens on similar occasions in recent years, I was taken in by the team of the diving club “Płetwal” from Giżycko. The weather was not favourable for diving, but in Masuria nobody cares about such details. As a result, a strong team of 19 hoodies and 38 flippers from Giżycko and the surrounding area took to the water.
And here is how these events were recorded with a goose feather by the court chronicler of KP “Płetwal”:
[blockquote style=”2″]”Apart from the waste lying on the bottom, which is a standard sight we see during diving in our lakes, we were captivated by the views of our Masurian wrecks and shoals of fish, which looked fantastic in the light of our torches, and the proverbial icing on the cake was a pike with a catch in its mouth. After the dive, thanks to the support of the Gizycko City Council, souvenir T-shirts and a sweet surprise were waiting for the divers and security staff. Diversnight is not only diving, but also the integration of the environment, so immediately after the end of the diving part on the town beach began a meeting of generations within which many of us could properly complete the process of “Decompression”, which began immediately after diving.”[/blockquote]
Heartfelt thanks were also received by the lifeguards of the Mazury Voluntary Rescue Service, who in addition to active participation in Diversnight, in a professional manner secured the body of water within which the diving was carried out.
For my part, I would like to add that Diversnight 2017 was a great opportunity to conduct a dive together and, perhaps more importantly, to integrate several generations of divers. There was no shortage of stories from earlier and closer times, which certainly allowed to acquire knowledge that no textbook offers…
It was also a great opportunity to integrate and activate the local diving community and spend time together in good company. So if you, dear reader, missed out on similar attractions this past Saturday 4 November, you have something to regret and think about until Saturday 3 November 2018!
