A group of divers from Redruth intend to solve the mystery of a 19th century shipwreck that rests near the Scilly archipelago, off the coast of Cornwall. They hope to solve the mystery surrounding the cargo of the wreck, known locally as the ‘Wheel Wreck’.

The whole team is highly motivated and well organised. The group uses 3D plans of the wreck, as well as photo and video documentation. All of this, combined with historical sources, is intended to help them learn the story of the sinking and write the final chapter related to the mysterious wreck.

The cargo resting at the bottom of the sea, looks like a cast iron pump-like machine. It is thought by some researchers of the subject to be a shipment from a foundry located in Cornwall. The project is being led by The Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Maritime Archaeology Society (CISMAS), which was set up by members of the Peninsula Sub-Aqua Club some years ago.

Although this site is not one of the largest dive sites in the area, it is of great interest to the diving community and historians. The findings of researchers to date, have established that the find dates from the period 1770-1830.

The wreck with the mysterious cargo was discovered in 2005, and already in 2007 it was given official protection under the act known as the Wreck Act”. It is thanks to the provisions contained in this document that the most diverse wrecks found in British territorial waters are protected.
