According to reports from the scene, a diver working at a depth of 3m was immobilised and injured in the leg by a piece of sharp metal plate. It was only the intervention of a second diver that allowed the casualty to extricate himself. The victim was conscious after surfacing and was immediately taken to hospital, unfortunately the man could not be saved.

The diver has been identified as Israel Franco Moreno. Originally from La Corunia in north-west Spain, the man worked as an underwater welder for Titan Salvage. Along with a group of other divers, he worked between decks 4 and 5. Their task was to place 30 large flotation tanks on the starboard side of the Costa Concordia wreck and to first cut out any items that might pose a hazard.

The President of Tuscany, Enrico Rossi, has spoken out in the newspaper La Republica:

“This is yet another bereavement added to the long list of victims of the Costa Concordia liner, bringing even more pain to us all. In addition, rage rises in us because a young man who was only doing his duty has died.”

The investigation into the whole incident is still ongoing and we can expect more concrete announcements soon.
