Diver killed when hit by boat

On Sunday, May 5, an emergent diver was hit by a speeding speedboat in Australia’s Frankston (southeast of Melbourne). The accident victim died and the perpetrator of the collision fled the scene and is being sought by police.

The accident happened at around 1pm local time. In the stretch between Frankston and Mornington, an approximately 20-year-old diver was struck by a high-speed motor boat. The accident victim and his partner were picked up by another boat passing nearby, whose crew rendered assistance to the injured.

After the divers were transported to Frankston pier, the accident victim was attended to by paramedics who performed CPR. Unfortunately the young man died without regaining consciousness. His peer with whom they had carried out a joint dive did not require medical attention.

In State of Victoria waters, the speed limit is five knots (9 km/h) within 50 metres of a person in the water and 100 metres from a dive flag. It is unknown at this time whether the dive site was properly marked and whether the motor boat operator was even aware that an accident had occurred.

Police are still looking for the boat and the man steering it. A message has been published asking anyone who can help identify the perpetrator of the accident to get in touch.
